Imagine standing on a cliff in Greece. The sun is setting over the Aegean Sea. The person you love is right there saying “I do.”

Y’all — is there anything more stunning than that?

A destination wedding abroad is genuinely one of the most romantic choices a couple can make. But I’d be doing you a real disservice if I just sold you the dream.

So here’s the dream AND the plan. Because you deserve both.

First, let’s acknowledge what makes these weddings so special.

Your wedding and your vacation are the same event. Your guests — the ones who show up — are your absolute ride-or-dies. The setting creates photos that no local venue can replicate.

And the intimacy? Destination weddings tend to have smaller guest counts. That means more time with each person. More presence. More meaning.

That’s a genuinely beautiful combination.

Here’s where I need you to stop scrolling and actually pay attention.

Getting legally married in another country involves real paperwork. Every country has different rules. Some require long residency periods before your ceremony. Others require translated documents. Some don’t recognize foreign marriages without extra steps.

Every Country Has Different Requirements
Italy, Greece, Mexico, France, and Bali all have different legal processes. Research your specific destination early — not after you’ve booked the venue.

Some couples choose to do a small legal ceremony at home first. Then they have their destination celebration abroad. This is actually a very common and practical approach.

Start the Paperwork Immediately
Give yourself at least 12 months for international weddings. Paperwork takes longer than you think. Especially across language barriers.

Don’t wait on this. Seriously. Start the legal research on day one.

This is non-negotiable. A local planner is not a luxury for a destination wedding abroad. It is a necessity.

They know the vendors. They know the permits. They know which venues actually deliver what they promise. They’ve been to the backup locations when it rains.

You simply cannot Google your way to that knowledge.

They Know Things Google Cannot Tell You
A local planner knows which florist actually shows up on time. They know which venues have flexible caterers. They know which beach requires a permit three months in advance.

That knowledge protects your investment and your sanity. Hire someone local early.

How to Find the Right Local Planner
Ask for referrals from couples who have married in your chosen destination. Look for planners who specialize in international weddings. Request to see real reviews — not just portfolio shots.

Interview at least two or three planners before you commit. The right fit matters as much as experience.

Your guests love you. But they’re not travel agents. You need to make this easy for them.

Hotel Blocks Are Non-Negotiable
Set up room blocks near your venue as early as possible. Share clear booking links with guests. Make the accommodation decision simple and obvious.

The easier you make the logistics, the more guests actually show up. This is just true.

Set Up a Simple Guest Communication System
Create a wedding website with all travel details. Include flights, hotel options, transportation, and a basic itinerary.

Give guests at least 10 to 12 months of advance notice for an international destination. People need time to plan and save.

Let’s talk money honestly. Destination weddings can be incredibly cost-effective on a per-guest basis. But that doesn’t mean they’re cheap.

  • International vendor markets have different pricing structures than home.
  • Currency exchange and international payment fees add up.
  • Shipping anything internationally — decor, dress, etc. — costs real money.
  • Travel and accommodation for you and any vendors you bring from home.
  • Backup plans for weather can add unexpected costs.

Build a detailed budget before you fall in love with any specific venue or package. Know your real number going in.

Your vendor team is everything for a destination wedding. These are people you can’t easily meet in person before the day. Vet them carefully.

Your Photographer Is the Most Critical Call
For a destination wedding abroad, your photographer is your most important vendor hire. They travel with you or they’re local. Either way, they must know your vision completely.

Look at full galleries — not just highlight shots. Ask for references from couples with similar destination weddings.

Feeling inspired? Good. Here’s where to actually begin.

  • Choose your destination and research marriage laws immediately.
  • Set your real budget — before you fall in love with a venue.
  • Find and hire a local wedding planner in your destination.
  • Give guests maximum advance notice — aim for 12 months.
  • Set up hotel room blocks as soon as your date is confirmed.
  • Build a wedding website with all travel and logistics details.

Plan it right and it will be your absolute best day ever. I mean that completely.
