I think the best place to start wedding planning is deciding what the objective is for the wedding outcome. Obviously, the main objective is to be married to your person. Honestly, it’s the only one that truly matters, but before you jump into the deep end of what you envision this day to look like, try to consider what is more important to you – an amazing experience for your guests or an amazing experience that represents you two. I’m sure you’re thinking you definitely want both, but a lot of times, traditions — and most importantly, the budget — may keep that from happening. It’s important to decide early on which direction makes the most sense to you.

Things like not seeing each other before the ceremony can potentially change the experience for you and your guests. You may want to keep the tradition and hold off on photos together until cocktail hour, but depending on your venue choices and distance between locations, this may take longer than an hour — leaving guests to burn time while waiting for you to return. If you’re okay with skipping traditions and doing a “first look,” you can attend cocktail hour with your guests and then promptly start the reception for a more fluid approach.

This is a biggie in deciding the experience for the couple versus the guests. Summer weddings outside are gorgeous – in person and in photos. However, some areas in July and August can be super sunny and warm. Guests sitting outside in no shade for 20 minutes before the ceremony, the entirety of the ceremony, and then possible cocktail hour may not be as comfortable in the heat. Comfort in temperature is a big consideration when planning with guest experience in mind.

When thinking about the guest experience, a lively reception is where it’s at. Things like amazing appetizers, an open bar, custom favors, a full dessert table, a photobooth, and a solid DJ/Band are really what take things to the next level. Sometimes, the budget doesn’t allow for all those things to be included. A solid DJ/Band is kind of important regardless, but other options can really save on the bill. Just keep in mind that choice may hinder the overall experience for guests.

Again, the goal is to make the day amazing for you AND your guests, but when it comes to matters of the budget – the choice is yours.
