So, you’re engaged. Now it’s time for the planning to kick in. Don’t know where to start? Announcing your engagement is the first step into the crazy wedding planning journey you’re about to embark on.

What’s the first step, you ask? Well, there are some things to consider first. Think about your engagement story and how you want to explain it to someone. Who do you tell first? Do you feel you should announce on social media to everyone? Are soft launches a thing for engagements? What platforms are there to share it on? Do you two have a connection to a theme to announce it with? Do you have an appropriate photo to share with the post?

Thinking back to one of the most amazing days of your life so far, how did your fiancé propose? Do you have some amazing travel story with a secret surprise? Was it lowkey in your favorite space – just the two of you? Were your family and closest friends there? What made the moment beyond special to you? How would you tell someone the story of how you became engaged?

If family and friends were not at the proposal, who do you tell first? Parents, siblings, your best friend? How do you announce without spoiling the surprise to others? Got a super gossiper? Maybe tell this person last! Sharing the news can be just as amazing as getting proposed. Make sure you get your moment to shine!

This is truly a preference thing. Do you want everyone in the world to know you’re engaged to your best friend? Is it important for you to share the good news? Social media is the easiest way to get the news out to a ton of people at once.

Listen, I am old. Soft launches of relationships seem to be a new thing. Is this a way you’d like to announce your engagement? It does sort of elongate the surprise of the actual engagement by hinting at something big happening, or are you just too excited to share?

I’m sure there are plenty more than the few I know about. The basics include Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, Snapchat, and WhatsApp. You could even do a Reddit post if you want to share with the world. The possibilities are endless. Just think about where your target audience is.

When thinking about how or what to post, do you two have a common theme that connects you two? Could be anything from favorite TV shows, to movies, to hobbies – just something that is perfectly you two. Keep it simple with a one-liner or use a photo to capture the exact vibe you want to have celebrate your big news.

Obviously, I’m a photographer, so I always think photos are necessary. If you didn’t get one of the actual proposal, think about your favorite photo together, a photo of the ring, or create something entirely surrounded by your theme and announcing your big news.

No matter how or when you announce your engagement, make sure it is right for you! The vibe, the people, the platform… there are no right or wrong ways to share your big news. Be creative, be fun, and most importantly, be yourselves.
